Naltrexone (daily tablet) + Ventrol (monthly injection)

Naltrexone is an oral medication that acts by blocking the opioid receptors in the brain and decreases the pleasure-reward system. Vivitrol is the same medication but is a once-monthly intramuscular injection.
Important things to know about Vivitrol includes:
• Vivitrol is an Opioid blocker
• It must be administered by a healthcare provider
• It is a Once-monthly injection
• Should be use in addition to counseling
• It is non-addictive and is NOT a narcotic
• Vivitrol requires opioid detox of 7-14 days prior to the start of treatment to prevent potential opioid withdrawal. Opioid withdraw can cause intense symptoms that may require hospitalization/death.

Naltrexone for Alcohol Addiction

Alcohol is one of the chemicals that triggers the pleasure reward system in the brain and Naltrexone acts by blocking opioid receptors in the brain which prevents that feeling of “reward”. By taking Naltrexone, the reward or pleasure is reduced, which in turn reduces the frequency of drinking.
With the addition of barriers to alcohol consumption and instituting behavior modifications, individuals may be able to reduce alcohol use to safer levels or eliminate it completely over time.

It is important to note that:

• Naltrexone/Vivitrol does not block the effects of alcohol if you drink, you will still get drunk.
• Alcohol use will still lead to poor judgment, inappropriate behavior, slowing of reflexes and in-coordination.
• You can still get a DUI/Al.
• Naltrexone does not protect against the toxic effects of alcohol so it can still cause issues with the stomach, liver, brain, and heart.
